"Art shouldn´t be just a way to earn money. Art is a way to be concerned with the people who live with you around, an arm of social awareness, a tool to show the reality hidden behind the stereotypes. An artist is not a god, but he is an artisan, but also a philosopher using the visual arts to explain the world, contributing to improve it." |
"El Arte no debería ser sólo una manera de ganar dinero. El arte es un modo de estar preocupado de la gente de vive a tu alrededor, un arma de conciencia social, una herramienta para mostrar la realidad escondida detrás de los estereotipos. Un artista no es un dios, sino más bien un artesano, pero también un filósofo que usa sus habilidades para explicar el mundo y contribuir a mejorarlo". |
Iniciativa YURTA
Promoting Nomadic Cultures by the ways of Art |
The Artist and the Person
Santiago Carralero Benitez (Málaga- Spain, 1962), founder of Iniciativa YURTA Project, studied fine arts in the Fine Arts Universities in Tenerife and Valencia, focusing his early works of art on commissioned portraits. Between 1986 and 2006, he gets a batchelor degree in History in Madrid to study later Anthropology, specializing in the peoples living on the fringes of traditional history: the nomadic peoples. In this time he travels to more than 30 countries in four continents, carrying out research among the gypsies of India, the Yaghan community of Tierra de Fuego, the Yuqui tribe in Amazonas basin, the Callawaya group in bolivian plateau, the Kung! San of Kalahari desert, the Khampa of East Tibet, the Ewenki of northeast China, the Gaine in Nepal, etc. In 2008 he publish "Wandering Souls: A Travel to Past from the present-day India" (in spanish), about the different castes belonging to the Gypsy stock in India. After this time of travels and studies, he decides to take again the brushes after 20 years without pictorial production, but this time to reflect the nomadic way of life, joining his two passions: painting and nomads.
More than an artist, he defines himself as an artisan, far of the contemporary abstract painters and more related with the masters of Renaissance and Impressionism. In the field of artistic innovation he wants to retrieve the abstract concepts derived from figurative painting, using a formal plastic language to shake the imagination of public. He thinks that the present situation of art depends too much of investors and large marketing campaigns where the painter need not prove their ability in front of the public, because who decides is not the public. For him painting art is in danger to become just a market value. His painting is slow, using the "thin layer over layer" old techich of dutch, spanish and italian masters, whom he admires and respect as artists and artisans. As an artisan to the service of nomads, as he likes to describe himself, his purpose is to show to Nomads and Indigenous People like classical models, people able to be protagonist for their own, proud of their origins and their own culture, in their natural environments, with their rights to live there and giving example of an alternative way of understanding the relationship between human beings and nature. Dignyfing the figure of nomads by art he wants to contribute, through the Iniciativa YURTA project, to raise awareness about what model of world we want for us and our descendants.
